Burnie
Settled in 1827 as “Emu Bay,” this regional city is best known for its container port and other major industries. Burnie’s early heritage was dominated by the dense rain forests that shrouded the land and around a century later, by the paper mill that has helped shape the city into what it is today. Burnie unveils a cache of places to visitors with a few hours to spare or a day or two of their vacation set aside. With sand and surf practically lapping on the porch steps, the central business district at Burnie provides a through street to the beachside boardwalk as well as to a 17-kilometer long walking trail bordering he city. See the native rainforests and walk along the scenic pathways of Burnie Park to a majestic waterfall. Or drive to the Emu river and catch a glimpse of platypus making their way along the bank. When you’ve worked up an appetite doing all this, head up the hill and try the famous cheeses at the Lactos Cheese Tasting Centre or sample the wide array of Tasmanian specialty produce and the best wines at local prices.
